Christmas markets in Vienna & Prague: what to wear in December, packed into a free cabin bag

Standing still outside in the cold is the hard part. Dress for hours at a market stall, not a brisk walk.

4.0 °C (39 °F) avg high−0.4 °C (31 °F) avg low Fits a 40 × 30 × 20 cm free bag Planned for 4–5 nights (both cities)

A Christmas market trip is a different kind of cold. You're not striding between sights, you're standing still holding a mug of something hot, often after dark. Vienna and Prague are both colder than Paris or London in December, with nights around or below freezing.

The plan: one seriously warm coat, worn on the plane, plus thin thermal layers that pack flat. Everything else fits the 40 × 30 × 20 cm free bag.

  • Around freezing. Average highs are only a few degrees above zero in both cities, and average lows dip below 0 °C.
  • Drier than western Europe: Prague is the driest city in this guide, with Vienna in between. Rain or sleet still falls on several days a month.
  • About 8 hours of daylight in mid-December, so most market visits happen in the dark, which is when they look best and feel coldest.

Layer it up

Three thin layers from your capsule beat one thick coat in Vienna & Prague in December: add or peel them off as the day changes.

Base · next to skin
Thermal top and thermal leggings
Mid · warmth
Merino jumper, or the fleece/merino half-zip
Outer · wind and rain
Insulated, wind-resistant parka

☀ When it warms up: Between markets and warm cafés or museums: unzip the parka and swap the jumper for the lighter half-zip.

🎒 Stash it: Hat, scarf and gloves go in the parka pockets; the half-zip squashes into your day bag.

Karen’s tip

On the plane

  • Wear your heaviest items on travel day: coat, knit and your bulkiest shoes. They’d take the most space and weight in your bag.
  • Planes can be cold with the air con, so take a jacket on board.
  • An inflatable cushion that packs into its own small, discreet pouch: a head cushion on the flight and a pillow on beach sunbeds. You choose how much air goes in, so it’s as firm or soft as you like, which a foam neck pillow can’t do.

What locals actually wear

Sourced tips summarise or quote the linked source; anything marked editorial is our own advice. We don’t make up “local” style tips.

  • In Vienna, winter dressing leans traditional and polished: Loden coats, cashmere coats and shearling, with oversized scarves and woollen hats (Vienna's Mühlbauer is a famous milliner).Source [1]: Monocle
  • Monocle describes a classic Viennese winter look of a black knee-length coat with tailored trousers.Source [1]: Monocle
  • A licensed Prague guide recommends thick-soled, waterproof, lined boots worn with wool socks, because cobbles get wet and cold.Source [2]: Real Prague Guides (licensed Prague guides)
  • The same guide's advice: "leave your fashionable but thin wool coats at home". Choose a waterproof, wind-resistant parka that reaches at least to your hips.Source [2]: Real Prague Guides (licensed Prague guides)
  • Bring a scarf, a beanie and touchscreen gloves. Prague Castle is windy and St Vitus Cathedral is unheated. Snow is rare, so the cold is mostly damp and windy.Source [2]: Real Prague Guides (licensed Prague guides)

Your style: best fits here are Parisian chic, Quiet luxury and Boho with an edge. Find your holiday style →

Market evening, maximum warmth

Hours outside at the stalls
  • Insulated, wind-resistant coat or parka (hip length or longer)
  • Thermal top and thermal leggings
  • Merino jumper
  • Jeans or trousers over the leggings
  • Lined waterproof boots and wool socks
  • Beanie, scarf, touchscreen gloves

Tip: Thermals under jeans add far more warmth than a second jumper, and they pack flat.

Vienna café and museum day

Coffee houses, galleries, the Hofburg
  • The coat
  • Fine knit or cashmere crewneck
  • Tailored dark trousers
  • Waterproof boots
  • Wool hat and big scarf

Tip: Tailored trousers and a dark coat nod to Vienna's smarter winter style, which matters in grand coffee houses.

Prague Castle hill

Castle, Charles Bridge, cathedral
  • Parka with hood
  • Thermal top plus fleece or merino half-zip
  • Leggings under trousers
  • Thick-soled boots
  • Beanie and gloves

Tip: Keep the thermals on for St Vitus. It's unheated, so it doesn't warm you up the way a museum would.

Karen’s tip

Change your hair, change the look

Swapping my hair from up in the day to down in the evening (or the other way round) gives the whole outfit a different look. Even one piece of jewellery I didn’t wear earlier does the same.

💡 It’s a free trick, and it saves packing extra outfits.

Terrain and footwear

What’s underfoot

The ground

  • Prague: mosaic cobblestones of limestone cubes (6x6 cm) on pavements and granite setts on roads
  • Prague: steep hill and stairs up to the Castle
  • Tram tracks in both cities
  • Vienna: cobbled lanes (e.g. Spittelberg) and wide paved boulevards
  • Ice, slush, grit and salt in winter
  • Long periods standing on cold ground at Christmas markets

15,000–20,000 steps, plus hours standing at marketseditorial estimate

Trouble spots

  • Prague Old Town and Malá Strana mosaic cobbles. Prague City Tourism: 'Strolling through Old Prague in high heels is definitely a challenge'
  • The climb from Charles Bridge up Nerudova to Prague Castle (steep, cobbled, about 25–30 minutes) and the Old Castle Stairs. Tram 22 to Pražský hrad is the gentler route
  • Vienna Spittelberg market: narrow cobbled alleys
  • Icy cobbles and tram rails in both cities

☀ Day shoes

Waterproof, insulated ankle boots with a deep-lugged, grippy rubber sole, plus thermal socks.

☾ Evening shoes

The same ankle boots, which work from day to night: a sleek black waterproof leather boot. For concerts or the opera, a low block-heel boot or smart flats (taxi or tram door to door).

✕ Leave at home

Stilettos and narrow heels (they catch in the mosaic cobbles). Smooth-soled fashion boots on ice. Canvas trainers in slush.

Season notes: December can bring frost, snow, slush and icy pavements. Pull-on ice grips or traction cleats are a cheap, small backup for icy spells. Standing at markets is colder than walking, so wear warmer socks.

Karen’s tipHeels and cobbles don’t mix. Check the ground before you pack heels: thin heels catch between cobbles, so a wedge or block heel is steadier for evenings.

One pair, day to night: The best space-savers are a sleek waterproof leather ankle boot (Paris, London, Vienna & Prague, Amsterdam, Rome in December), a clean minimalist leather trainer or slip-on loafer (Tokyo, London), and a low block-heel sandal (cruise). Travel day: wear the heavier pair (see On the plane). Break in shoes before the trip.

Planned for 4–5 nights (both cities), using a soft backpack of about 20–24 litres made to the 40 × 30 × 20 cm size. The rule that makes it work: wear your bulkiest items on the plane. The dotted outline is easyJet’s bigger free bag.

Wear on the plane worn

Karen’s tipRoll, don’t fold. I roll my clothes, stuff socks and small bits inside my shoes, and keep socks in a clear bag that comes home full of dirty laundry or wet swimming costumes. How I pack →

Leave at home
  • A thin fashion coat (the Prague guide says leave it at home)
  • Suede boots
  • A second pair of boots (wear one good pair)

Liquids: going vs coming home

Going (from the UK)

UK airports vary. Heathrow, Gatwick, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Belfast International, Belfast City, Bournemouth, Southend allow containers up to 2 litres; most others, including Manchester, Stansted and Luton, are still 100 ml.

Flying home from Vienna & Prague
  • 2 litresVienna (VIE)
  • VariesPrague (PRG), in a 1 L clear bag (100 ml only from T1, which handles UK flights)

Pack your liquids to 100 ml for the whole trip.

Karen’s tipWater bottle: keep it full through a 2-litre UK airport, or take it empty through a 100 ml one. Flying home: Vienna: keep it; Prague: varies, empty it to be safe.Check your airport →

Karen’s tipDecant, don’t buy mini. I decant sun tan lotion into clear 100 ml spray bottles, and my day cream, night cream and cleanser into one squashy three-section silicone pot for trips of up to 4–5 days (separate pots if longer). Far cheaper than minis. How to do it →

Karen’s tip

Check your room first

Read the hotel, Airbnb or hostel listing, or message the host, and ask whether they provide:

  • Iron or steamer
  • Hairdryer
  • Toiletries: shampoo, shower gel (conditioner often isn’t supplied)
  • Towels, plus beach or pool towels
  • Washing machine or laundry service
  • Plug adapters or USB sockets
  • Kettle, tea and coffee
  • Slippers and a robe
  • A safe

Hostels often don’t provide towels or padlocks.

Karen’s tip Bring your own hair products. Most hotels supply shampoo but often not conditioner. Decant favourites into leak-proof travel bottles under 100 ml (fill them about ¾ full), or switch to solid bars, which don’t count as liquids. Amazon UK: Lericttor 100ml Silicone Travel Bottles ↗Check price · Amazon UK: Friendly Soap Travel Bar 95g (hair & body) ↗£4.72, price checked 20 Oct 2026

Every item they provide is one you don’t carry.

Karen’s tip

No-iron packing

Pick fabrics that don’t crease. Woven cotton and linen crease; knits, merino, jersey and most polyester blends barely do.

  • Hang creased clothes in the bathroom while you shower.
  • Pack a small crease-release spray under 100 ml (it counts as a liquid).
  • Roll clothes, and keep crease-prone pieces in a packing cube on top, not in a vacuum bag.
  • Check whether your hotel or Airbnb has an iron.

More no-iron tips →

Karen’s tip

Buy it there?

Adding a checked bag typically costs around £60–80 return on a budget airline. So if your bag is full, buying bulky or liquid items when you arrive is often cheaper.

Think sun cream, full-size shampoo, insect repellent, a beach towel or flip-flops.

Yes in this destination: Everyday shopping in Prague is generally cheaper than in the UK; Vienna is closer to UK prices.

More on buying it there →

Tick items off as you pack (your ticks aren’t saved). Liquids rules depend on your departure airport and change from time to time. Check your airport’s current security rules before you decant your toiletries (see liquids rules by airport).

Flying there on Ryanair, easyJet or Wizz?

  • Ryanair and Wizz Air under-seat bags are 40 × 30 × 20 cm. A thermal-based capsule fits, but only if you wear the parka and boots on the plane.
  • Doing both cities? The bag goes on the train with you, so a backpack is easier than a wheeled case on cobbles.
  • easyJet's 45 × 36 × 20 cm free bag lets you add a second warm knit.

Duty-free bag: Ryanair: extra bag allowed · easyJet: extra bag allowed · Wizz Air: extra bag allowed. It still has to fit under the seat or in a locker, and gate staff decide. Duty free and your free baggage →

Sizes come from each airline’s official page (see our free baggage reference for links). Rules change, so check your booking before you fly.
