Casual to chic

Day to night: casual to chic

You don’t need a separate evening outfit in a free cabin bag. Keep the same base and swap one or two pieces, and the day look becomes a dinner look.

The rules

01

One neutral base

Build every outfit on the same dark jeans, tailored trousers or a midi skirt, plus one coat. The base never changes between day and night.

02

Swap top + shoes + one accessory

A knit becomes a silky blouse or cami, trainers become ankle boots or loafers, and one small extra (earrings, a belt, a red lip, a crossbody) does the rest.

03

Pack shoes that work both ways

Polished ankle boots, leather loafers or dressy flat sandals look right with jeans by day and a skirt at night. Wear the bulkiest pair on the plane.

04

Choose fabrics that don’t crease

Knits, jersey, merino and silky polyester come out of a cabin bag looking fine. Linen and woven cotton don’t (see our no-iron tips).

05

Accessories are the cheapest swap

Earrings, a belt and a scarf weigh almost nothing and change the whole look. A tote by day, its contents moved to a small crossbody or clutch by night.

Karen’s trip: hand baggage only to Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia

I’ve been to Smith Mountain Lake three times, and every time I’ve gone with hand baggage only. My fare included a 23 kg hold bag, but I took a larger bag for the overhead locker instead (I remember it as about 56 × 45 × 25 cm; check your own airline’s size limit).

I had connecting flights too, and going hand baggage only helped so much: I didn’t have to wait for baggage between flights. And if your flight is late, the time you have to make your connection is limited, so hand baggage only is another real benefit.

The weather was reliably hot, so I packed mostly little light dresses, and I still didn’t wear all my clothes.

☀ Day
Flat shoes and light dresses.
☾ Evening
For meals out: nice wedge heels and slightly fancier, but still light, dresses.

Why hand baggage only?

  • No worrying about my bag getting lost.
  • Quicker out of the airport to make my next connection.
  • No waiting for baggage between flights, which really counts if a late flight leaves you short of time.

Takeaway: Even when a hold bag is included, hand baggage only can be worth it on trips with a connection.

Karen’s tip

Flats by day, heels by night. On hot-weather trips I wear flat shoes in the day and a heel in the evening: two light pairs, and the heels dress up the same little dresses. I personally prefer wedges because I can walk in them better, especially on cobbles and uneven pavements.

Karen’s tip

Change your hair, change the look

Swapping my hair from up in the day to down in the evening (or the other way round) gives the whole outfit a different look. Even one piece of jewellery I didn’t wear earlier does the same.

💡 It’s a free trick, and it saves packing extra outfits.

One pair that does both

A sleek waterproof leather ankle boot works from cobbles by day to dinner by night in most winter cities; a clean leather trainer or slip-on loafer suits Tokyo and London; a low block-heel sandal suits a cruise. Wear your bulkiest pair on the plane and pack the other. Each guide’s “What’s underfoot” section says which pair suits that trip.
