What to wear in Santorini in September, hand baggage only

Photogenic, steep and windy. Flat grippy shoes for the steps, a layer for the wind and a light outfit for sunset in Oia.

Monthly climate: yearly summary only Fits a 55 × 40 × 20 cm, 10 kg cabin bag Planned for 4-7 nights

September keeps the heat but loses the peak crowds. The caldera villages are built on cliffs: almost everything involves steps.

If you’re arriving by cruise ship, you’ll usually be taken ashore by tender boat to Fira’s old port, then up by cable car, the steps or donkey.

  • UNCONFIRMED monthly normals: we couldn’t retrieve the HNMS table for Santorini. HNMS-based research (1982-2019) gives mean temperatures from about 12°C in February to about 26°C in July, with mean winds of 5.3-7.4 m/s.
  • Summer Etesian (meltemi) north winds make it feel cooler and blow hats and skirts about.
  • Very little cloud in summer: strong sun on white walls.

Karen’s tip

On the plane

  • Wear your heaviest items on travel day: your bulkiest shoes and any layers. They’d take the most space and weight in your bag.
  • Too hot for a jacket? Skip the jacket and take a neutral-colour wrap or pashmina. It keeps you warm on the plane and doubles as an evening wrap and as a shoulder cover for churches here.
  • An inflatable cushion that packs into its own small, discreet pouch: a head cushion on the flight and a pillow on beach sunbeds. You choose how much air goes in, so it’s as firm or soft as you like, which a foam neck pillow can’t do.

  • Greek Orthodox churches and monasteries expect shoulders and knees covered; some monasteries lend wraps or skirts at the door (common practice; not an official nationwide rule, editorial).PackToWear editorial advice, not a quote
  • Donkey and mule rides on the Fira steps are limited by a 2018 circular to 100 kg or one-fifth of the animal’s weight; welfare groups urge visitors to walk or take the cable car.Source [2]: GTP Headlines, 10 Oct 2018

Caldera walk

Fira to Oia path, villages
  • Shorts or light trousers
  • Tee
  • Grippy trainers
  • Cap, sunglasses

Tip: The Fira-Oia trail is about 10 km with rough sections (editorial).

Oia sunset

Sunset, dinner
  • Midi dress (a heavier fabric or one with a slip, for the wind)
  • Flat sandals with grippy soles
  • Light knit or wrap

Tip: Wind and steps: no floaty mini dresses, no heels.

Black-sand beach

Perissa, Kamari
  • Swimsuit + cover-up
  • Water shoes or sandals

Tip: Black sand gets extremely hot.

Karen’s tip

Change your hair, change the look

Swapping my hair from up in the day to down in the evening (or the other way round) gives the whole outfit a different look. Even one piece of jewellery I didn’t wear earlier does the same.

💡 It’s a free trick, and it saves packing extra outfits.

Terrain and footwear

What’s underfoot

The ground

  • Hundreds of steps in Fira, Oia and Imerovigli
  • Polished marble and whitewashed paths (slippery, especially when wet or dusty)
  • Donkey paths with droppings on the Fira old-port steps
  • Black volcanic sand

12,000-20,000 steps with lots of stairseditorial estimate

Trouble spots

  • Fira old port to Fira: about 587-588 steps (cable car takes about 3 minutes; long queues when ships are in)
  • Oia sunset crowds on narrow paths
  • Tender boat transfers for cruise passengers

☀ Day shoes

Grippy trainers or rubber-soled sandals with a back strap.

☾ Evening shoes

Flat sandals with rubber soles.

✕ Leave at home

Heels, wedges, smooth soles.

Season notes: Windy all summer; marble is slick.

Karen’s tipHeels and cobbles don’t mix. Check the ground before you pack heels: thin heels catch between cobbles, so a wedge or block heel is steadier for evenings.

One pair, day to night: The best space-savers are a sleek waterproof leather ankle boot (Paris, London, Vienna & Prague, Amsterdam, Rome in December), a clean minimalist leather trainer or slip-on loafer (Tokyo, London), and a low block-heel sandal (cruise). Travel day: wear the heavier pair (see On the plane). Break in shoes before the trip.

Planned for 4-7 nights with a paid 10 kg cabin bag (55 × 40 × 20 cm, Ryanair’s size) plus the free under-seat bag. The rule that makes it work: wear your bulkiest items on the plane.

Wear on the plane worn

In the bag 11 items

Karen’s tipRoll, don’t fold. I roll my clothes, stuff socks and small bits inside my shoes, and keep socks in a clear bag that comes home full of dirty laundry or wet swimming costumes. How I pack →

Leave at home
  • Heels and wedges
  • Wheeled case if your hotel is on the caldera (often only reachable by steps, editorial)

Karen’s tipLeave the towel at home. “I use the towels in my room, and hotels usually offer pool towels too, sometimes for a small refundable deposit. Worst case, I buy a cheap towel locally and leave it behind.”

Liquids: going vs coming home

Going (from the UK)

UK airports vary. Heathrow, Gatwick, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Belfast International, Belfast City, Bournemouth, Southend allow containers up to 2 litres; most others, including Manchester, Stansted and Luton, are still 100 ml.

Flying home from Santorini
  • 100 mlSantorini (JTR), in a 1 L clear bagto re-check

Pack your liquids to 100 ml for the whole trip.

Pack every liquid in 100 ml bottles inside a 1 litre clear bag, so the same pouch works on both legs. Travelling as a couple, each of you gets your own 1 litre bag, so split the toiletries.

Karen’s tipWater bottle: keep it full through a 2-litre UK airport, or take it empty through a 100 ml one. Flying home: Santorini is 100 ml, so empty it and refill airside.Check your airport →

Karen’s tipDecant, don’t buy mini. I decant sun tan lotion into clear 100 ml spray bottles, and my day cream, night cream and cleanser into one squashy three-section silicone pot for trips of up to 4–5 days (separate pots if longer). Far cheaper than minis. How to do it →

Liquids rules by airport, with sources →

Karen’s tip

Check your room first

Read the hotel, Airbnb or hostel listing, or message the host, and ask whether they provide:

  • Iron or steamer
  • Hairdryer
  • Toiletries: shampoo, shower gel (conditioner often isn’t supplied)
  • Towels, plus beach or pool towels
  • Washing machine or laundry service
  • Plug adapters or USB sockets
  • Kettle, tea and coffee
  • Slippers and a robe
  • A safe
  • Beach gear: umbrella, loungers

Here: Cave hotels and caldera suites usually supply hairdryers and toiletries; small studios may not.

Hostels often don’t provide towels or padlocks.

Karen’s tip Bring your own hair products. Most hotels supply shampoo but often not conditioner. Decant favourites into leak-proof travel bottles under 100 ml (fill them about ¾ full), or switch to solid bars, which don’t count as liquids. Every item they provide is one you don’t carry.

Karen’s tip

No-iron packing

Pick fabrics that don’t crease. Woven cotton and linen crease; knits, merino, jersey and most polyester blends barely do.

  • Hang creased clothes in the bathroom while you shower.
  • Pack a small crease-release spray under 100 ml (it counts as a liquid).
  • Roll clothes, and keep crease-prone pieces in a packing cube on top, not in a vacuum bag.
  • Check whether your hotel or Airbnb has an iron.

More no-iron tips →

Karen’s tip

Buy it there?

Adding a checked bag typically costs around £60–80 return on a budget airline. So if your bag is full, buying bulky or liquid items when you arrive is often cheaper.

Think sun cream, full-size shampoo, insect repellent, a beach towel or flip-flops.

Buy before you go in this destination: Island shops are more expensive than mainland supermarkets; bring the basics in 100 ml bottles (editorial).

More on buying it there →

Tick items off as you pack (your ticks aren’t saved). Liquids rules depend on your departure airport and change from time to time. Check your airport’s current security rules before you decant your toiletries (see liquids rules by airport).

Free baggage check

Flying there on Ryanair, easyJet or Wizz?

  • A week of beachwear fits in one 10 kg cabin bag (Jet2 and TUI include one; on Ryanair it’s Priority & 2 Cabin Bags, on easyJet a large cabin bag) plus a free under-seat bag.
  • Couples: one 10 kg cabin bag each, and share one under-seat bag for sun cream, chargers and documents. Or book a single 15 kg hold bag between you and both travel with just the free bag: compare the prices for your dates.
  • Cruise passengers: tender boats mean stepping from a moving launch; wear flat shoes and keep hands free.

Duty-free bag: Buying at the airport? On Ryanair, Wizz, Transavia, Norwegian and easyJet one shop bag can usually go on board on top of your bag; on Jet2, BA, Aer Lingus, Vueling and Lufthansa it has to fit inside your allowance. Gate staff decide, so keep it small. Duty free and your free baggage →

Sizes come from each airline’s official page (see our free baggage reference for links). Rules change, so check your booking before you fly.

Sized for free baggage

Baggage picks

The ticks compare each bag’s stated outer dimensions with each airline’s free-bag size. A struck-through name means the bag is too big for that airline. Soft bags squash a little; hard cases don’t. We haven’t tested these bags ourselves yet.
